Symbolism and Meaning of the Bear:
To
the First Peoples of North America the bear is the guardian of the
mountain country. Travelers passing through, or people living in the
high country need to make offerings to Grandfather-Grandmother Bear and
thereby experience welcome and blessing as well as a feeling of being
"at home," an experience of well-being that comes in being at peace with
the guardian spirit of a place. In European lore, Bear was the
incarnation of the beautiful Goddess Artemis whose constellation is Ursa
Major, the great She-Bear of the pole star.
