About the artist:

Expressions of the Heart, The Art of Al Choi
Al Choi was born in South Korea in 1971. At the age of seven another world became animated and alive when his mother gave him crayons and a sketch book for his birthday. At this point the limitless imagination of a rare heart began its evolution through art.
Since then all of Al’s focus has been on art . It was this unconscious shift at such a young age that allows this collection of paintings today to speak volumes about the rarity and vision of this gentle man. The way he looks at the world is from the freedom of a birds wing. Unattached to the nitty gritty, his paintings remind us that beauty is around us, the earth is full of wonders, and that magic is in all the fragments and particals of light that surround us. A brave space to enter, yet so convincing is his body of work, that it stand out in a genre of Spiritual paintings and translates with brilliance his desired expression. In Korea, Al had the opportunity to apprentice under some of the countries greatest teachers. He competed successfully in the competitive arena, where his paintings received many awards. As important as his creative studies were, his daily practice of meditation has become as vital to his expression as his pallet. His appreciation for meditation was also expressed for many years in his career as a illustrator, where his images created a visual that words could not express. It is also within the silent space, that meditation provides, that many of the paintings reveal themselves. Al Choi’s portraiture brings wrinkles and smiles alive. The faces that he introduces, hold grace and compassion, their personalities radiate acceptance. These faces are achetypal expressions of endearing and understanding.
In 2002 Al made his first visit to the West. It was in the Verde Valley that Al, like many who travel here.
was struck by the beauty of the surroundings. He may be the first artist to successfully intrepret the sensations and and contemplations of the area. What we may vaguely feel in our minds, Al brings these visions onto canvas. It is through this medium that Al expressed his appreciation of the beauty of the environment, and more subtle the appreciation of energy and invisible fractions of light. When he paints the landscape, it is with the wisdom of the ancients and knowledge of the etheral and quantum fields of reality. Sedona and the area of Northern Arizona is famous for its spirituality and “other worldlyness” . Al Choi’s paintings convey a image to those feelings. Al’s work stands out not only in the prescison and skill of the old school of artists, but in the rarity of Al’s choices of expression. His heart is determined to awaken, however jaded our lives, to the forgotten world of the mystical. His paintings holds a different view of reality, a place of purity that we are all too busy to notice. Images speak louder than worlds, and his paintings sing a chorus . So much so that even the most mature minds can find themselves considering the fantastic. Ulitmately Al Choi is determined to awaken us all to the world. “ it is vital that we comprehend the huge nature of our connection to the world and each other” It was these sentiments that lead him to the community of artists in Jerome, and the Old Jerome High School. Here his work can be seen complimenting the space of a rare school of aritsts, but within spiritual field of its own. Got a question, want to talk to a real person?
